I was raised with five older sisters. It was like living in a sorority house. The drama, the wisdom, the laughter, the courage, the heartbreak painted the walls of our home. The halls of our house echoed with poetry and passion, stories, gossip, urban legends, and singing. There is something magical about hanging with the girls.

Yesterday was International Women’s Day. There were several suggestions on how to celebrate.

-Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor

-Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).

-Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman

I did not play along. The truth is I was in the thick of life, out in the world and engaging. I spent a few hours with clients, helping people jump the fence to a greater degree of freedom. I spent a few hours helping my mother-in-law eat lunch and remember her words. I spent a few hours helping my son navigate a situation to ensure that he is able to move forward in life. And to be 100% transparent, I also went shopping. My favorite digs to go treasure hunting is a place called Hope Chest where I volunteer once a month. The money from Hope Chest goes to support the Constance Morris House.  Constance Morris House is Pillars’ domestic violence shelter, a place for domestic violence survivors to find refuge as they flee abusive relationships. Full discloser, if you must know… I got a new (to me) dress.

How could I not show up to where I am being called to serve? This morning I came across this image of three beauties playing chess. I began to contemplate the invitation of International Woman’s Day. What is really our next best move?

I understand that we can have an impact by NOT showing up… but my heart tells me something different. “Lady, the world needs YOU to SHOW UP now more than ever.

I have spent years hiding and years trying to find and honor my truth. I still feel that there are places where I water it down when I am actually called to speak up and burn it down. I am honestly frightened by my own fire sometimes.

I have been feeling a fierceness boil in my bones and I am not interested in having it simmer on the back burner. I am turning up the heat and letting it burn away all that is not REAL.

I have no patients for simmering stews when there are so many calling for us to serve up the LOVE already.

Now is not the time to fade. We are bing called to lean forward, pay attention and speak the truth. Now is not the time to excuse yourself from the conversation. Not even for an hour, and especially not for a day.

If you celebrated and took the day off and wore red, great! But today is a new day. One in which we are all being called to show up and strategize our next move in love. For ourselves, for our mothers, for our daughters, for our sons and for the world.

Queen (chess) The queen (♕,♛) is the strongest piece in the game of chess, able to move any number of squares vertically, horizontally or diagonally.

It’s time to play the QUEEN. Join our private Spiritual Vixen group for more inspirations.
