Heading down to Florida on a two-day road trip, my inner pre-teen sings a chorus of “Are we there yet? Let’s keep driving, nose to the grindstone and get it done.” As you can imagine, this blaring backbeat can be a buzz-kill for what could be a delightful adventure. It’s not so much my desire to get there, as it is my addiction to annihilate “now.” My ego wants to keep me distracted and disfranchised and it takes its job very seriously. I am not alone in my madness.

We live in a world in motion, running a constant race to “over there” and away form “here.” Screw the process and get there now.  We’re starving for a grace period, an idol hour, and a meandering back road. The thing we forget is that peace requires no road trip. It’s right here and right now at every hour and around every curve. While racing from the snow and towards the sand and sunsets, I am reminded of a beautiful section of A Course In Miracles.

“Who could feel fear in such a world as this? It welcomes you, rejoices that you came, and sings your praises as it keeps you safe from every form of danger and of pain. It offers you a warm and gentle home in which to stay a while. It blesses you throughout the day, and watches through the night as silent guardian of your holy sleep. It sees salvation in you, and protects the light in you, in which it sees its own. It offers you its flowers and its snow, in thankfulness for your benevolence.”

Peace is here- in the sand, in the snow, in the moment. It moves at the pace of nature, and it’s yours for the asking, accessible with little effort. You, my blessed beauty, are worthy of its benefits and bliss. Do not divorce or deprive yourself of this peace, especially when the ego kicks in with the pestering voices of, “Are we there yet?” Instead, plant your feet, take a breath, and affirm, “Where else could I be? Where else would I be? I am here, I am right here.  After all the curves, classrooms and curious curriculums I have come. I have arrived.”

Then take a moment and enjoy the view.
